From the August 1964 Seventeen:

“Don’t throw the seeds away. They’re chocolate. You can even eat the shell take a bite it’s sweet as a watermelon and light as air our angel-food surprise. you make it with a mix, tint part pink, part green, bake it in a mixing bowl — and take it outdoors to eat on a lazy back-yard afternoon or summer night.”

I made that cake when i got the magazine in high school and many many times since then. Recently I sent the recipe to my son in law as it was a favorite of my daughter. Well cake mixes don’t work the way they used to !! Has anyone tried updating it? We could use some help.

    thank you

Suzane, good point about the cake mix evolution. I have yet to try constructing the watermelon cake — looks a little daunting. Since it’s angelfood cake, I wonder if the mixes have changed that much? Please let us know if you attempt this!
